Healthy Hints
From the School Nurse
|
|
The
month of May has flown by…possibly because
Brooksiders have been so busy! Despite the wet
weather on May 2nd, Our Relay for Life
raised $1,463.00 for the American Cancer Society.
Thank you to all who contributed through donations
and helping out that day. The 4th graders
have been walking around New Jersey for the past 6
weeks! Ms Ventura’s class walked 3060 miles, Ms
Fitzpatrick’s 2901 miles and Ms Starkey’s 2747 miles
for a grand total of 8708 miles. Collectively, they
walked around the state almost 15 times! They tracked
their miles of activity with pedometers and now will
take the message of being active and healthy to their
buddy classes in the first grade.
Summer vacation will be upon us before we know it.
And while it is such a great time to relax and enjoy
various activities, it has some dangers. Before
vacation begins, I want to leave you with some safety
precautions for a worry free summer.
You can’t think of summer without thinking of sun,
swimming and outdoor picnics. Remember to apply
sunscreen 20 minutes prior to going out to ensure
protection from those harmful rays and reapply every
2 hours (more frequently if swimming or sweating).
And don’t forget sunglasses and hats! Drink plenty
of water also to avoid dehydration in the heat. Your
body is made of 65% water, so you need to constantly
replenish the supply.
Wherever your child is swimming there should be some
important safety rules in place. Never swim alone
and always have adult supervision. When a lot of
people are gathered it is a good idea to designate
one adult who is responsible to watch the swimmers.
If “everyone” is watching them then sometimes “no
one” really takes the responsibility. Have children
ask before they dive so an adult can be sure the
water is deep enough. And of course, at the first
sign of thunder or lightning, get out of the water.
Don’t wait to see the lightning. With pools come
other concerns. Do not allow riding toys around a
pool. Be sure that there is no lawn furniture that
can be used to climb into the pool area near the
fence. Remind children that going down a slide head
first can be dangerous. Recently, there have been new
stories about the dangers of pool drains which can
trap swimmers under water; make sure yours is working
properly.
Outdoor dining is a great way to enjoy the summer,
but keep food safe for everyone by properly cooking
meat. Since the grill may cook the outside of meat
quickly, it is important to check the internal
temperature with a thermometer before serving. Safe
temperatures for hamburger is 160, ground poultry is
165, steak is 145-160, whole poultry is 180 and
breasts are 170. Any food left out over 2 hours may
not be safe to eat and if the outside temperature is
above 90, food should be refrigerated after 1 hour.
If you are packing coolers for a picnic, it is a good
idea to pack beverages in a separate cooler from the
perishable food. Since the beverage cooler will most
likely be opened often, the food cooler can stay
closed and cold longer.
And
finally, since our children will be spending time at
the pool, playground and beach, it is a good idea to
review all pedestrian, bike and stranger safety rules
with them.
Here
are some summer fun activities and snacks. Let your
kids leave their mark on the world. Wet Prints
are a fun way to get moving. Place a large bucket or
pan filled with water on the driveway. The kids can
step in the water and run around in a pattern leaving
a temporary design wherever they go!! Or play Scoop
Ball with recycled scoops. Cut off the bottom of
plastic milk jugs and let them have a good old
fashioned ball toss!! Nothing is better on a hot
summer day than a frozen treat! Make Dripless Pops
with a package of Jell-O, 1 cup boiling water and 1 ¼
cup 100% fruit juice. Combine the ingredients, pour
into molds, insert a popsicle stick and freeze.
Another refreshing snack is Frosty Fruits.
Simply wash fruit and freeze in a zip lock freezer
bag. Frozen grapes, cherries and berries are a real
favorite!
Have
a very happy, healthy and safe summer! |
