On October 27th, the Anaheim Angels defeated the San Francisco Giants and won the World Series.



Cranford High School received FOUR awards for "Promising Practices" from the National Schools of Character program. This is a national program sponsored by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C. that recognizes schools and districts demonstrating outstanding character education initiatives that yield positive results in student behavior, school climate and academic performance.

The four initiatives cited as "Promising Practices" are:
  • CONquest - an interdisciplinary freshman project based on "a life of consequence"; developed by Eileen Dachnowicz and the CONquest Team.
  • Peer Teaching Power - Peer Development Program that aids freshman transition to high school and conducts puppet presentations in elementary schools vs. substance abuse; developed by Kitty White.
  • Puppet Pedagogues- an advanced crafts project in which puppets designed by students teach important lessons to toddlers in our Child Development Program; developed by Dr. Josephine Harris
  • The Scholars' Circle - an enrichment program that shaped students to become community leaders; developed by Eileen Dachnowicz
Twenty-five students took part in the Job Shadowing Day in conjunction with Union County College and the Cranford Chamber of Commerce. The students visited a wide range of job sites that included a law firm, a day care center, an auto dealership and an optometrist's office.


Mr. Bernard Flashberg, the Social Studies Supervisor has been chosen to be a member of the Executive Board of the Diversity 2000 Council at Kean University.

Cranford High School bids farewell to Dr. Laura Cardine, a wise and caring leader...
During her four-year tenure as principal, we shared with her a journey in pursuit of excellence, and New Jersey Magazine named CHS as one of the "top 75 High Schools in NJ." In times of difficulty, Dr. Cardine reached out to our school community with acts of understanding acts of a leader who cared for her Cranford High School family. Now her journey takes her on a different path, separate from Cranford. We wish her well in her new position as Assistant Superintendent of Schools, and we thank her for her leadership.

Science teacher, Ms. Amy Biasucci, received the New Jersey Technologist of the Year Award, an Earthwatch Institute Teacher Fellowship, and a professional development grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. As an Earthwatch scientist, Ms. Biasucci spent part of last summer in Brazil doing scientific research in the remote Pantanal region. She was also interviewed by the Philadelphia Inquirer about her use of Palm Pilot technology in the classroom.

The first week in December was "Celebration of Learning" week. More than 45 teachers invited their colleagues into their classes to observe teaching-learning strategies in action. This year's celebration focused on lessons that incorporated service learning, differentiation of instruction, or teaching for understanding with technology.

CHS Model United Nations Team participated in the YMCA-sponsored 31st Annual Regional Model U.N. Conference held in Hershey, PA.
More than 900 students from 30 schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington D.C. took part in this event. The 64-member Cranford delegation, under the direction of advisor, Coach Lawrence Fuhro, took home 14 awards, including:
  • "Premier Diplomat"- Peter Kingston
  • Elected as a Delegate to the National Conference - Mike Folger
  • Alternates to the National Conference - Lisa Grebenyuk, Peter Kingston
  • "Outstanding Position Paper" - Chris Masterson
  • "Character Development Recognition" Awards - Lisa Grebenyuk, Jim Graff, Lee Krinzman, Kate Kuhn, Josh Laskey
  • "Outstanding First Time Delegate" - Hayley Robinson
The 2002 Boys Cross Country won the Watchung Conference, Union County (6 straight), State Section, and the Stewart Memorial meets. The team ended up fourth in the Group III Championships.

The Girls Cross Country team ranked second in the Conference, third in the county, fourth in the State Section, and nineteenth in the Group II meets.

Senior Eddie Clinton of Cranford High School defeated Zack McGuire of Scotch Plains in the 3,200-meter run in mid-December. Clinton lost to McGuire, 16:33 to 16:38, at a dual meet earlier in October. He later went on to w Section 2 Group 3 Championships. Eddie then placed seventh at the state Group 3 meet, qualifying to compete at the Meet of Champions, where he placed 17th with his personal best of 16:25.62.

CHS Junior Bridget Murphy won the all-around title at both the Cougar Invitational and the Union County Championships before winning the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2 and finishing eighth in the state. Murphy, who suffered and recovered from a broken knee in her freshman year, says, "Winning the section was the highlight because it was the biggest meet I won. "

In January of 2003, the CHS choirs made their second Carnegie Hall appearance as they performed Mozart's Coronation Mass under Mid-America Productions.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers triumphed over the Oakland Raiders and won Super Bowl XXXVII on January 26, 2003.

THE COLLEGE BOARD FORUM 2003
Cranford High School is at the forefront of gender equity awareness...
The College Board Middle States Regional Meeting featured an interactive presentation by Ms. Eileen Dachnowicz, Ms. Diane Connelly, and Ms. Joan Puma, titled "Balancing the Gender Gap in Math and Technology". Two special programs- Visible Women and Technofilles- were highlighted during the presentation. The winners of several New Jersey Department of Education awards, these programs are proven initiatives that have resulted in greater female achievement in math and technology.

Boys' Basketball Team Wins Union County Section Title


Congratulations to the boys' basketball team-- Brian Zurvansky, Justin Haber, Chris Drechsel, Terrence Grier, Dave Snyder, Stephen Caprio, Joseph Bulthaupt-- and to Coach Tom Jonstone on winning the school's first section title since 1959.

Japanese Language Study Awards 2003--Seton Hall University
...Hernie Abines and Natalie Hormilla were selected by Seton Hall University to receive the awards based on their "appreciation and greater understanding of Japanese language, culture, and society." Natalie was nomiated for her exceptional communication skills in the Japanese language. Hernie was nominated for successfully incorporating his interests in Japanese culture into his other subject areas.

The 2003 Academy Awards'
"Chicago" led the Academy Awards with six Oscars, including Best Picture. Nicole Kidman and Adrien Brody won their first Oscar awards. Nicole Kidman for Best Actress in "The Hours" and Adrien Brody for Best Actor in "The Pianist."

At the New Jersey State Poetry Reading Contest, held at Kean University, Cranford High School distinguished itself as the only school with two finalists. In competition with fifty-two students from twenty-six high schools, sophomore Rob Argen placed 2nd, reading poems by D.H. Lawrence, and freshman Jonathan Schwartz placed 5th, with his program of poems by Matthew Arnold. Both students are to be commended and congratulated for representing Cranford with such distinction.


Superviosr of Academic Affairs is Honored
Eileen Dachnowicz, Supervisor of Academic Affairs, has been honored by the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English as the Outstanding English Language Arts Educator of the Year for 2003. She was recognized for her many and ongoing contributions to academic excellence at the annual NJCTE Conference, and again at the Governor's Awards in Arts Education Celebration. Read what colleagues who nominated Mrs. Dachnowicz for the prestigious NJCTE award have to say about her undeniable influence as a teacher and her powerful leadership as an educator.

Moreover, this year, Mrs. Dachnowicz was selected as one of the honorees of ABC-7's "Above and Beyond: Inspiring Students and Teachers" for her "commitment to excellence." Her story was featured in an ABC-7's television special.



Mrs. Barbara Narus is Honored
Mrs. Barbara Narus, teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences, is honored for her commitment and service to our school and to our community as the Cranford School District Teacher of the Year 2003-2004.
