Promising Practices
"Celebration of Learning" is a program which provides teachers with a worthwhile professional development offered by their peers in
collaboration with our student body. "Celebration of Learning" is a
week long program. Our program is done in February. During this week,
teachers volunteer to showcase their classes. Teachers sign up to
observe their peers. Each day of the week highlights a different
instructional method. This past year, our week focused on
differentiation, assessment, technology infusion, questioning and
a "mixed bag" day. The teachers "opening up their classrooms"
can either integrate their students into the lesson or utilize them in a pre-
planned workshop. Our teachers do both. Students are involved in the
planning and implementation of the presentations.
"Holiday-Fest" is a school-wide service learning project. On one day in
December, third and fourth grade students from an urban school are
invited to our high school. They are treated to a day of fun, complete
with activities, food, music and more. Each elementary student is
assigned two high school students, called "elves." These elves each
buy a small gift for their "adopted" child, but more importantly, serve
as their personal escorts for the day. There are many workshops for the
students to attend. Some of these workshops include: Gumball Machine
Making, Candle-Making, Story Reading, a Puppet Performance, African
Artifact Exploration, Mexican Crafts, Origami, Gym Competitions, a Play, Music
and Singing. A return visit to the elementary school is held in May.

We researched and represented the views of over a dozen countries, from India to Kyrgystan, from Iraq to the Philippines. Indeed, Cranford sophomore Max Lasky chaired the Organization of African Unity.

In order to assist some of those affected by Hurricane Katrina, Cranford High School has adopted Biloxi High School in Mississippi. Juniors, Elizabeth Johnstone, Allison Stolte, Bridget Dooley and Julie Anne Garretson in The High School University of Cranford, under the direction of Mr. John Arlotta have organized a host of fundraisers for this cause. Recently, a benefit concert "Cranford Sings for Katrina" raised over $1500. A dance attended by 230 junior and seniors at CHS on November 5th generated almost $3000. As of November 9th, Cranford High School has raised almost $7000 for Biloxi High School, with more events planned. For more information about Biloxi schools, visit their web site at www.biloxischools.net. Please contact Mr. Arlotta at (908) 709-6278 if you would like to assist in this initiative.
In order to assist some of those affected by Hurricane Katrina, Cranford High will be adopting a school in the troubled area. We have decided to adopt Biloxi High School in Mississippi. University Director, Mr. John Arlotta along with three Cranford University students, Bridget Dooley, Allison Stolte and Julie Garretson will be leading this adventurous task. There was a meeting of interested students and staff before school one day. It was encouraging to see over 200 in attendance. There will be many events planned towards this cause. The first event planned is a school dance for juniors and seniors, called Fall Ball. The monies generated from this event will allow Biloxi HS to purchase some of their many lost supplies, where many of their students and staff lost virtually everything. Elizabeth Johnstone will be coordinating this effort. Nick Fanelli is coordinating a talent show/concert, again to raise funds. A group of University students plan on making a commercial to air on Channel 35, which will extend our efforts into the community. Joe Kardos will be leading this project. Members of Y.O.D.A. led by Mrs. Francis are planning many activities. The first activity will solicit donations at sporting events. Much more to follow.
Due to the generosity of our students, staff, and parents, it pleases us to announce that Cranford H.O.P.E. was very successful. In one week, this fundraising activity for the victims of Hurricane Katrina raised a total of $4,617.46. A check to the American Red Cross will be disbursed by the Business Office.
The following individuals are to be recognized for facilitating the collections in their respective buildings:
- Fran Serpico, BAS
- Dan Callaghan, BPS
- Jen Hilborn, CHS
- Paul Maloney, HAS
- Lisa Bowness, LAS
- Greg Oriscello, LIN
- Ann McGovern, OAS
- Chris Stewart, WAS

Ready-Set-Teach is designed for students interested in teaching and learning how to present information in an effective way. Additionally, students investigate how the mind works and the learning process involved in education. On April 25, 2005, three members from the state department visited Cranford High School and were treated to a presentation of the program. Students presently in the program, as well as some graduates currently attending college, led the presentation.
Intergenerational Studies, developed by Mr. Richard Hurley was awarded a Promising Practices recognition from The Character Education Partnership, a national organization. Intergenerational Studies is part of the Sociology class taught at Cranford High School. In this program, a small group of senior citizens discuss various topics with our students. The main goal of this program is to have students learn from a primary source how society has changed over the last 50 years or so.
