" One of the things about equality is not just that you be treated equally to man, but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man. "

... Marlo Thomas, b. 1943

What Are We Doing?

The winner of many awards for its public engagement, the club continues to take an active role in the community by helping other schools to establish such an organization, sending its members as speakers for groups and including information on women's support groups of Union County on its website. It continues its tradition of shaping young women to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Work of the Visible Woman:

  • holds bi-weekly meetings to discuss relevant issues
  • designs and maintains its own Website
  • sponsors brunches and events to support women's causes
  • honors female entrpreneurs, mathematicians and scientists at its annual forums
  • reviews pertinent literature on education, psychology and adolescent stress
  • conducts self awareness sessions
  • awards scholarships to graduating visible women

The emphasis of the Visible Woman focuses on action with the theme " Believing in Ourselves " as our motto.

Traditionally, computer expertise has been deemed a male skill. To counteract this notion and provide an avenue for publicity about our projects as well as the work of women's organizations in Union County, this Website has been developed. Through the help of the mathematics department, the club is actively engaged in making the public aware of cogent issues. The Technofilles, a club devoted to improving computer expertise in females, is in full swing under the direction of Ms Kerith Lewis and Ms Heather Caldwell.

Part of our work is to show the achievements of women. Working in conjunctions with the Cranford Historical Society, they have unearthed interesting information about outstanding women of the town whose achievements have been noteworthy.

The program of social action is still continued with renewed emphasis on helping women in distress. To aid the battered women of Union County, the Visible Woman donated money to the YWCA of Eastern Union County, the agency that provides physical and psychological assistance to battered women.

In the high school, the Visible Woman is continuing its role as the champions of gender equity in education. Through its yearly forum, speakers addressed the group to spur interest in science and mathematics. Past fourms herladed females in entrepreneurial roles, and featured outstanding women who have achieved success in independent businesses.

In short, the Visible Woman is enlarging its role, and is joining forces with other groups in taking a positive stand in developing ways of helping females reach their potential.
