January/February
- Review course work from first semester;
ask teachers what you can do to improve in second semester.
- Review PSAT/NMSQT test results and ask for help on
questions that caused you problems.
March/April
- Select courses for next year. Talk with teachers about your
course selections. Check with your counselor to be sure your chosen
courses are preparing you for college entry. Be sure to have at least
four, preferably five, solid academic courses. If appropriate, challenge
yourself with honors and AP courses.
- Sophomores - Consider applying for a summer program at
a college, designed to introduce high school students to
college majors/courses. (Financial assistance may be available.)
May/June
- End the year in good academic shape.
- Ask your English teacher for a summer reading list.
- Think about careers you might enjoy, and contact people
doing those jobs. See if you can shadow them sometime during
the summer, or volunteer your time, or (if eligible) ask about
summer employment. Congratulations, you are now
Sophomores and Juniors!!

July/August
- Read, Read, Read - from the English reading list or others'
suggestions.
- Get to know your library. Talk to the librarian about how to do
research in a library. This will prepare you for possible
assignments next year.
- Continue investigating careers by talking to parents'
friends or friends' parents. Visit workplaces where possible.
- Talk to college friends about their college experiences.
September
- Welcome back to school!
- Sophomores - Check with your counselor about whether you should
take the PSAT/NMSQT.
- Juniors - Sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT. This test will help:
test your college-level skills; gather information to help choose a
college; get in touch with colleges; compete for scholarships; and
prepare for the SAT.
October
- Juniors (sophomores) - Take the PSAT/NMSQT.
Get a good night's sleep and remember to eat breakfast.
Bring #2 pencils, a calculator, a watch, and ID (if needed).

- Juniors - You're in the most important year, as it is the year
that colleges review carefully as they decide about
admissions. Make the most of it!
- Sophomores - Look over your extracurricular involvement.
It's important to develop more than just your academic skills. The
preference is quality (depth of involvement), not quantity.
November
- Sophomores - visit your guidance office, career center,
or library and do some career searches ... look online!
- Juniors - Make a list of what you look for in a college (location?
majors? size? sports? competitiveness? other considerations?).
Then visit your guidance office, career center, or library and do
some college searching...look online! Search for scholarships also.
December
- Juniors - talk to visiting past graduates, home for the holidays,
about their college experiences.
- PSAT/NMSQT takers - review your Score Report. Determine
what skills need practice prior to the SAT. Read any information
received from colleges. Organize college information that
interests you for future reference.
