Nurse's Notes

Flu season is upon us. We need to take precautions in order to avoid getting sick. The following information has been read by teachers to your children during homeroom. Teachers referred to the “Cover Your Cough” posters displayed in all classrooms. These posters illustrate ways to prevent the spread of germs when coughing or sneezing including the proper way to wash hands.

Precautions to help avoid getting sick follow:

  • Eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep to help keep us strong.

  • Hand washing is our best line of defense. Wash your hands before coming to school and after lunch.

  • If you have to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or use the upper portion of your sleeve, not your hands. Put the used tissue in the waste basket.

  • Cleanse your hands after coughing and sneezing. Purell is available in the classroom for you to cleanse your hands. When using Purell, as with any other alcohol based product, it should be applied to your hands and then rubbed in until your hands are dry. Care should be taken not to have Purell type products make contact with your eyes as it can cause serious damage.

  • If you do develop flu symptoms such as fever, body aches, sore throat, headache, or cough, please stay home until you are fever free for 24 hours without Advil or Tylenol.

  • If you have a pre-existing health condition, then please contact your physician.

  • If your child is ill, please report this absence on the absentee hotline. Be specific about the reason for the absence. We monitor the attendance daily and once a week it is reported to the Union County Department of Health.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Ahern at 908-709-6305. Thank you.
