"The Campus Environment"

The purpose of this webpage is to introduce and enlighten the community to the importance of Alana Buonaguro's informative work. Many take the beauty of their own backyards for granted. Cranford is a lovely place and our goal is to show that everyone should take some time to 'smell the roses.'

"It is impossible to avoid one's environment or escape the pressing ecological issues facing us today. Environmental education must be taken to a higher level to meet the needs of modern society. The environment spans all disciplines, reaching into all aspects of our lives. And to study the environment we need look no further than our own backyards. By stepping right outside their classrooms, students can see theory and textbook rhetoric put into practice. They can learn from the surrounding area of Cranford High School: The Campus Environment.

A pamphlet, map and accompanying textbook have been created to be used as resource guides, explaining the natural resources of the Cranford High School region. Each chapter provides information about a topic (Background), its relevance to Cranford citizens and high school students (Backyard), as well as its significance to the global population (Global Issues). It provides students with a firm background in basic ecology to be used as a springboard for action. The labs and activities found in each section (Application) are intended to spark interest and provide hands on experience. Together, the book forms a cohesive guide for the curious student. The school building that pupils attend each day is transformed into a working laboratory and a playground for learning. The exploration of a familiar area leads to surprising discoveries and a personal ownership of issues facing the community. By examining an ecological issue on a local scale (Local Issues), global concerns gain pertinence. This experience provides enough information for students and teachers alike to investigate and appreciate their campus environment." -Alana Buonaguro
