The Community as a Classroom

Your teachers look forward to working with you in the exciting adventure of making your community your classroom. The first step in making your community a classroom is by reading and discussing articles that point out how we need to understand and use math and science in all aspects of life. Next, you will demonstrate your knowledge of math and science by designing and participating in your own service project. Perhaps your class will adopt a park in Cranford or be doing landscaping work around the school. You may also choose to perform service individually by tutoring a student, working with a community-based organization, or enhancing the environment for wild birds or other animals.

During November and December, you will read and discuss selected articles in your math and science classes. By January 16,2008, you will submit the Interim Planning Form that describes your service project. You will assemble a portfolio to showcase your project, including the service learning reflective essay and evidence of participation, by April 16,2008.

Finally, a team of math and science teachers will assess your portfolio based on the predetermined rubric. Your score will be added to your final exam grades in your math and science classes. Five points will be deducted, as usual, for a missing portfolio. In addition to this packet, all information is available on the CHS website.
