A celebration of self, service and school in the pursuit of a
"Life of Consequence"
Dear Ninth Grade Student,
Each year our academic program includes an interdisciplinary themed unit of study. Our freshman project is called "CONquest." In focusing upon self, service and school, you will develop and reflect upon a life of value-a "life of consequence!"
The pages that follow explain the components of this project. In late September, you will be visited in your English class. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have at this time, as "CONquest" is explained thoroughly. You will write a letter to yourself in class that will ask you to "look ahead" at your upcoming four years at CHS. This letter will be kept for you until your senior year. At this time, you will be given your essay back so you can see how you have changed and developed while at Cranford High School.
The "self" component will ask you to reflect upon something of interest to yourself-a passion (hobby, talent, etc). The "service" component will ask you to give of yourself outside of the classroom. Finally, the "school" component will ask you to examine one of the many literary or historical characters who demonstrate this common theme-a " life of consequence."
Each of these components will be scored with a rubric. You can attain up to two points for each component or a total of six points for this project. The points you earn will be applied to your English final exam grade, as well as another of your final exams (social studies, math or science-your choice!) You can lose 6 points for not doing this project, although that is certainly not the intent.
This project has been revised with input from your classmates and teachers. We hope that you will enjoy "CONquest" and I look forward to seeing the results of your efforts.
Anticipatingly,
John Arlotta
Supervisor of Academic Affairs
