Diversity and Tolerance:

Yesterday, Today,and Tommorow
Letter to the Students

Dear CHS Sophmore,

Diversity can be seen in the faces of all Americans: the differences we all possess combine to create what is uniquely "America."

As the United States enters the 21st century, a new era in our history is emerging. You, as Sophomores, will begin to explore this new era in terms of diversity and tolerance.

In creating a portfolio, you will have the opportunity to express your ideas on interesting, vital, and, perhaps, controversial, issues. Class readings, discussions, activities, and projects will encourage you to reflect and respond to these issues.

Your portfolio will contain three parts - Yesterday (the past), Today (the present), and Tomorrow (the future). Each piece must include a reflection and your thoughts regarding tolerance and diversity. The portfolio will be submitted to your U.S. History I teacher on May 7, 2007. It will be reviewed by a panel of social studies teachers who will assign a score of 0 to 5 points, using the rubric which is included in your packet. These points will be added to your U.S. History I final exam in June. Failure to submit a portfolio will result in a deduction of 5 points from your final exam in U.S. History I.

Your teachers are looking forward to working with you on this experience. If you have any questions, see your history teacher or me. My office is located on the fourth floor, Room L400.

Hoping this enhances your Sophomore learning experience -
