Senior Service Learning Project 2011-2012
If you are interested in applying for the SENIOR SERVICE PROJECT, it is necessary that you assume all essential responsibilities and obligations.
Please complete the following information and submit it to Mrs. Burfeindt by March 12, 2012

PURPOSE:
This student-initiated program offers seniors an opportunity to conclude their Cranford High School educational experience and requirements by completing a community service or professional work project.
Students must know that this program is a privilege, not a right.
CRITERIA:
The community service must be:
a. Approved by the school;
b. In the form of a non-remunerative service to a non-profit organization and/or the community;
c. For an organization where the student has had no outside relationship with the employer.
PROJECT DURATION:
May 21, 2012 to June 08, 2012 (subject to change depending on snow days)
ELIGIBILITY:
a. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher calculated after the second marking period of senior year. Any student eligible at this point must maintain a marking period average of 3.0 or higher in the 3rd and 4th marking period.
b. Positive behavioral record is related to disciplinary referrals and attendance. Any student who has had an out of school suspension during the senior year will not be eligible.
c. Students who have exceeded 10 absences by the first day of the program will be ineligible.
d. Any exceptions to the eligibility requirements will be subject to the discretion of the principal.
RANGE OF PROJECTS:
Nursing homes, police departments, libraries, elementary/middle schools, recreation department, parks department, ambulance corps are a few project ideas. RULES, REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS:
a. Student applications must provide the following information related to their desired projects; project description, project goals, project location, methods for attaining goals, and reason for choice of project. Student applications must be printed in ink or typed and signed by the applicant.
b. Student must work 25 hours a week with a minimum of 2 hours a day not including lunch. Schedules may be altered to fit school related activities and obligations. Although students may want to make their own schedules, the employer ultimately determines the hours.
c. Students may elect to continue to take one or two classes at Cranford High School and that time will be counted towards the five hours.
d. A maximum of one absence will be allowed from the program regardless of the nature of the absence. Any more than one missed day will result in expulsion from the program and return to normal classroom activity. Students must inform Cranford High School and their employers if they will be out of work for any reason.
e. Each student is required to maintain a journal of daily activities related to the achievement of project goals. The journal must be turned in at the scheduled weekly meeting and will be monitored by the Senior Service Advisor.
f. Monitoring of the program will be continuous. Monitoring will consist of evaluation of student journals, employer evaluations of students, random on-site checks, and random telephone checks. Monitoring personnel will supervise project performance as it relates to the following:
1. Attendance 2. Tardiness 3. Attitude 4. Cooperation 5. Expertise.
g. Students will be required to sign a contract with all of the specifications of the program.
h. Any course requirements assigned at the beginning of the course such as a research paper will still be mandatory for students in the senior service program.
i. There will be a mandatory evening Parent/Guardian meeting prior to the start of the Senior Service Learning Project.
j. Prior to the start of the Senior Service Learning Project, students will be required to submit their contract and a form signed by all their teachers indicating they have met all classroom obligations - homework, quizzes, tests, books and/or fines submitted and all athletic equipment turned in.
FINAL EVALUATIONS:
a. The supervisor/host agency will evaluate the student's performance on an evaluation form provided for this purpose. These evaluations will be kept on file and made available to high school staff members for their review.
b. The participating students will evaluate their experience with a final written paper.
c. Additionally, a report will be submitted to the high school principal assessing the 2011 Senior Service experience.
MISCELLANEOUS:
a. Final Exams - All seniors involved in the Senior Service Program will be exempt from all final exams.
b. Expulsion from the program - Students' noncompliance with the stated rules, requirements, and expectations will result in the following actions:
- Immediate removal from the Senior Service Program and return to regularly scheduled classes.
- Ineligibility for exemption from final examinations.
At the advisor's discretion, ineligibility from class activities.
c. Students expelled from the program will be required to make up missed work at the teacher's convenience.
d. Athletics/Extracurricular Activities - It is the student's responsibility to fulfill any athletic/extracurricular obligations.
e. Class Activities - When the student hands in the weekly evaluation, it is his/her responsibility to find out about any upcoming class activities or events.
f. It is the responsibility of the student to provide his or her own transportation to and from their senior service site.
g. The student's grade for the fourth marking period is the grade they earn by (date unknown at this time). If a student is failing a class during the fourth marking period, then he/she will not be eligible to participate in the program. Students must maintain a C average during the fourth marking period to be eligible to participate in the program.
There will be no exceptions to this program without final approval of the principal.
