UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ENJOY COLLEGE

PARTNERSHIPS



February 2006

The High School, University of Cranford continues to forge partnerships with local institutions. Nine students: Jonathan Schwartz, Derek Rocchini, Elizabeth Johnstone, Julie Anne Garretson, Hannah Brechka, Greg Shapiro, Chrissy Oltmann, Mary Kate Miller and Hope Zanko have been attending a Play Writing Residency through Kean University. These students have been working with Directors John Wooten and Melissa Gawlowski from Kean during this month-long seminar. The residency culminated with professional actors performing the students' plays at CHS on February 17th.

Three University students: Colin Gates, James Murphy and Selwyn Delgado have been studying with Dr. Charles Murphy and Dr. Raymond Sullivan from Kean's Science, Math and Technology Department. Their research centers on the green fluorescent protein used for tracking in areas such as stem cell research.

On Saturday, January 21, 2006, Dr. Nancy Enright of Seton Hall University gave interested students in the CHS University program a "walk-through" of Dante's epic poem, The Divine Comedy. The students listened intently as Professor Enright led them through the circles of The Inferno, The Purgatorio and The Paridiso. In attendance were Elizabeth Johnstone, Noah Anderson, Tomm Hart, Ryan Zimmerman and Emily Starace.

On January 24, 2006, twenty University students viewed a live kidney transplant at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.

On February 9, 2006, University students Josh Hanke, Katherine Behrens, Natalie Laucius, Dan Manuyag and Hannah Brechka traveled with students from Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield to Duke Gardens in Hillsborough.

Eleven University students are reporting correspondents with The Eagle newspaper.

The High School University of Cranford is directed by Mr. John Arlotta. Mrs. Barbara Carroll serves as the program's coordinator.
