Summer Reading Assignment
On Monday, September 11, 2006 you will be responsible for turning in a dialectical journal for"Year of Wonder" by Geraldine Brooks. A dialectical journal is a journal that records a dialogue, or a conversation, between the ideas in the text (the words that you are reading) and the ideas of the reader (the person doing the reading). This is what you must do in your journal -- keep a dialogue with yourself. Write down your thoughts, questions, insights, and ideas while you read.
Be on the look out for and find examples which reflect the themes of
P E R S I A
P= Political: this theme deals with government, laws, order, etc.
E= Economic: this theme deals with money, trade, commerce, etc.
R= Religious: this theme deals with religion, spirituality, morals, etc.
S= Social: this theme deals with how societies are organized, customs, social classes, etc.
I= Intellectual: this theme deals with education, exchanging of ideas; "common sense", good decision making abilities, etc.
A= Artistic: this theme deals with ways creativity and emotions are expressed or conveyed.
Instructions for the Dialectical Journal
- You need 20 journal entries (they should be quotes you find throughout the book, not just the beginning, middle, or end).
- They must be typed 12 font, with standard 1? margins.
- In the LEFT COLUMN of your table in your journal, write down parts of the paragraph from the book you think are interesting, are important or fulfill the PERSIA thematic requirement.
- The MIDDLE COLUMN, list the page number(s).
- In the RIGHT COLUMN, write down YOUR OWN thoughts, commentary, PERSIA explanation, and/or questions about the quotes you wrote in the LEFT COLUMN.
- You must use the following format for your journal:

Continued Uses of the Summer Reading
You will be given an essay test on the summer reading on Monday, September 11, 2006. This will be your first test grade. The dialectical journal will be counted as a project grade. You will also use this book as a foundation for future practical skills exercises for writing essays which meet the AP test qualifications such as DBQ, Comparative, and Change Over Time essays.
