How to Become a Substitute Teacher

The Cranford School District is now currently accepting substitute applications

  • Education and Certification Requirements

You must hold a New Jersey teaching certificate issued by the State Department of Education or a valid county substitute certificate.  If you wish to apply for a substitute certificate, an official transcript reflecting sixty (60) college credits is required.  An official transcript must be submitted in support $125.00 to the Commissioner of Education).  A current Union County substitute teacher’s certificate is required for all applicants who do not hold a New Jersey teaching certificate issued by the State Department of Education.   Applicants can obtain a Union County substitute teacher’s certificate through the Office of the Assistant Superintendent for Administration.  After completion of the paperwork required, your name will be submitted for Board approval.  A county substitute certificate must be renewed upon expiration.

  • Mantoux Test/Physical/Immunization Records
The Cranford Board of Education requires documentation of a Mantoux test/Physical/Immunization Records (TB test) for employment as a substitute teacher.
  • Criminal History Review

All employees hired by a public school district who have regular contact with pupils, must submit to a criminal history background check through a fingerprinting procedure.  Fingerprinting is required of all new substitutes at a fee of $70.25.  More details on the fingerprinting process will be supplied when you pick up your substitute teacher packet.  

  • Employment Eligibility Verification
All new employees must complete an Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9, and show certain prescribed documents that establish identity and employment eligibility as stipulated by the United States Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization Service.

 

  • Application and Payroll Forms
An application for substitute teaching and a W-4 form must be completed prior to employment.

 

  • How You Will be Contacted

Calls for substitute teachers will be made by secretarial staff members. The calls are usually made early in the morning unless we know the evening before, or a few days ahead, that a teacher will be absent.

 

  • Substitute Teacher Salary Information
Substitutes are paid twice a month on the 15th and 30th. Substitutes pay is available two (2) weeks after the days worked. The rate of pay for those substitutes holding substitute certification is $70.00 a day for the first twenty (20) days of service; $35.00 a half-day. The daily rate increases to $80.00 a day beginning with the twenty-first (21st) day of successful daily substituting in the system. The rate of pay for those substitutes holding New Jersey Teaching Certification is $80.00 a day for the first twenty (20) days of service; $40.00 a half-day. The daily rate increases to $90.00 a day beginning with the twenty-first (21st) day of successful daily substituting in the system. For substitute assignments of twenty-one (21) days in the same assignment, the daily rate is $130.00 per day. This rate may be adjusted in special circumstances to Scale I, Step 1 daily rate by the Chief School Administrator with notification to the Board of Education.  This rate applies to substitutes holding a New Jersey teaching certification.
