standards for math practice the New Jersey student learning standards for mathematics have eight process standards format these transcends through all the great level these are not specific standards that rather processes that all students strike to use in their math education to become stronger more proficient math Learners the standards are listed by grade on the math website that is linked below the first one is make sense of and perseverance shopping this means that students should work to be able to explain the meaning of a math problem which will help them to find reasonable solution more proficient students are the easier it will be to understand and create meaning with shopping therefore it will be easier to not only find a solution to the problem but also to truly understand the problem and hopefully be able to apply that knowledge to different situation the second effective practice is to be able to reason abstractly and quantitatively this means students are able to make sense of quantities and their relationships and situations this hopefully will be students create meaning with math problems to true understand the conceptual meaning and the understanding of a math problem this can mean understanding of math word problem and how it relates to the real world to give it context in Mead and then once the problem is self understanding if the answer is reasonable in relation to the problem this allows students to gain a deeper understanding of math problem and not simply for focus on procedure of the problem therefore creates better meaning and eventually better app the next effective practice for student is to be able to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others successful math students are able to talk about math to both explain how they solve their problem along with being able to explain why this answer is correct reasonable and why this was the best way to stop that particular problem Yonkers today can you pictures manipulatives and diagrams to assist them with building reasonable argument and answers for that type of math problem students will also be able to analyze answers that are wrong and discuss relate to math but also as they relate to our everyday lives Elementary students can use blocks unifix cubes and other manipulatives to demonstrate understanding of computation real world problems and contacts students should also be able to use appropriate tools strategically this includes using technology appropriately to enhance or increase map skill symmetry students should be able to understand what math tools can be used and how these tools can best be used in different situation for example something as simple as paper and pencil and knowing that although we value Mental Math it is always important to check with also students understanding that if something is unclear what is the best thing to use to be able to solve and gain the best knowledge and successfully and efficiently solve the given problem students should also be able to attend to Precision mathematically proficient students communicate clearly and precisely to people regarding math words and topics
