# Math - Grades 6 - 8

The mathematics program for grade 6 builds upon previous math knowledge acquired in elementary school while continuing to develop and apply problem-solving techniques. Areas of study include:

• Operations with fractions
• Multi-digit numbers, factors, and multiples
• Rational number system
• Algebraic expressions
• One-variable equations and inequalities
• Relationships between dependent and independent variables
• Area, surface area, and volume
• Statistical distributions

The primary objective of Math-7 is to develop algebraic skills and concepts and to become familiar with algebraic notation.  Skills and concepts taught in earlier grades are linked to basic algebra skills. Students will extend their skills and begin to learn algebra concepts that serve as a transition into formal algebra and geometry.  The focus is on using a wide variety of activities and tasks to prepare students for Algebra 1. The advanced course is for students who have mastered the rational number concepts and operations, who have shown exceptional ability in problem solving, and who have demonstrated a high level of abstraction.  Areas of study include:

• Fluency with fractions, decimals, and percents
• Operations with rational numbers, including negative numbers
• One variable expressions and equations
• Integer exponents
• Linear equations
• Graphing linear equations
• Compare data distributions
• Data sets and sampling
• Geometry-area, surface area, volume, congruence, scale drawing, informal constructions, three-dimensional figures, transformations
